House of the Dragon season 2 episode 2. It's a great episode I have some issues with but generally one that added depth and layers to the aftermath of blood & cheese, as well as exploring family conflicts with both sadness and humour. This analysis review tries to pick apart some of my main feelings about the episode.

im actually greiving now, my favourite show is set to end in a few weeks and i want to actually sh00t myself . this show has changed my life and its one of my biggest hyperfixations. its the only show i care about and i even have one of their characters set as my wallpaper, i consume fan fiction and fan media every single day until nigjt and seeing it end makes me so sad and mad :( i dont know what to do. i need to accept it and go on but im so scared, this is the only show i like and i love everything about it. 98 percent of my figures are all from that show and i just imagine the characters and show in my head too in different scenarios, this show basically is absorbed into my heart and ive loved it since 2 years ago. no other anime is like this anime. i LOVE IT TOO MUCH!! im sorry for the vent, i needed to get this out of my chest. i know its dramatic but this is how i feel. i LOVE this show, its basically my other half. Im also like 13 too so like im hella dramatic x(

The Otto/Alicent to Alicent/Aegon scenes of seeking comfort from their parents broke me. The poison and generational trauma drips through and so many are quick to jump on Alicent's neck when her response, especially it being Aegon who she loves and resents and as a child having a child, you can tell that her inability to comfort strangles her. Reminiscent of S01 scene when Otto has to leave KL and is talking to Alicent, Rhys said something along the lines "he wants to comfort her and tell her he loves her and is scared for her but it's not in his vocabulary." The rejection Alicent receives from Otto after wanting to talk about the shame and pain she feels mirrors so beautifully into the inability of Alicent to comfort and support Aegon is so painful and excellently done, it's the tragic nature, twisted love and complete emotional detachment and understanding of makes watching the green faction so alluring and gives a great balance to everything transpiring on the Black side, where they are scrambling to find a foothold and get their rights while being a more "stable" unit(which is starting to unravel), I don't know, this episode was one of my favourite of the show, love me some character driven plotlines.

I think the fact that Aegon had such little interest in inheriting the Iron Throne means that Rhaenyra would have become Queen with zero issues. If the great lords reject a Queen, who cares? Send out the dragons and burn them into history. Rhaenyra would have totally given Alicent’s kids high spots in court too. So dumb

I don't think their relationship with Cole is comparable, alicent had already been married to the king had his children stayed faithful. What she does now isn't going against any duty. Rhanyera was the heir to the throne and was to remain pure and untouched before her wedding which she didn't then she married a gay guy willingly, to basically blackmail him into calling her bastard children his. Alicent is million times more virtuous then Rhanyera. Oh and then she fake killed her husband so she could fuck her uncle against her father's wishes. Have we gotten all that?

I’m thank you. I have been wanting a deep dive on Seville. I felt like you apologized overly much for offending precious and delicate sensibilities, stopping just short of really pondering possibilities…you’d approach and back off. So much apologizing. If we are going to review the psychology of Seville it comes with discomfort…the qualifications vs a disclaimer and trigger warning…feels like an unfiltered truly in depth approach as to the layers you were not willing to peel back could be a great opportunity. Let’s go there so we can understand…less time coddling, more time excavating. I truly want to know more about the 5 days. The mom, the siblings. The father. The accusations. The BBC. Charles. Diana. How he caught their attention with the worst personality…so many so high up. There’s also so much great content here…thank you! I wish you’d do a part two…the things unsaid.

I told my fiance that this series is a bit more boring in my opinion because they have less material to work with. The book is just an accounting of historical events. That gives them a lot of freedom but also less genius material that George RR Martin provided in asoiaf. I like the series but it's underwhelming. Perhaps it's leading up to something more incredible and these seeds will bloom. I hope so.

I think Otto and Alicent’s conversation toward the end of the episode was really interesting as well. Seeing Otto realising exactly what Aegon is and in many regards missing Viserys could almost make you feel like he’s realising his own hand in all this but then him and Alicent just conclude that they might still be able to manipulate Aegon, they can “fix this” implying they don’t understand that the damage they have done over decades of meddling and hate is far too much to be repaired in a short period if ever. I think Otto wants to believe that he is somehow smarter and better than those around him but it’s his arrogance, poor decisions and lack of self awareness that has gotten them into this mess and Aegon is now displaying the exact same problems, carrying on Otto’s legacy in a way that Otto definitely didn’t intend. They’re both blind to their own faults and recklessness.

Aegon's reaction to his son's death was very realistic for a father's grief. The lines "My son IS my legacy. My son IS heir to the iron throne". The way he is speaking in present tense like he can't accept that his son is dead. He also says he doesn't want to be seen as weak which also plays well with his "trying to be tough" exterior when towards the end of this episode he lets it all out and is vulnerable and fragile. He is deeply, deeply insecure and that affects a lot of who he is. He is not Joffrey. He is more like Cercei if anything. He is dumb but clearly loved and cared for his children. His poor decision making and ruling is also realistic for a person who was neglected and ignored his entire life. As opposed to Joffrey who was actually groomed and cared for. Aegon is one of my favourite character of this season.

It's fascinating how the audience can be manipulated so easily! To me, Otto was the best character in the show. He is decent man in Westeros standarts. He is smart, down-to-earth, not cruel person and lord. Daemon is a psycho - Otto pulled him further away from the throne. Rheanyra is stupid and spoiled (srsly, in reality she is supposed to be killed or moved away long ago! She is so incompitent as a queen! Read queen Elizabeth's biography or the russian empresses you'll see how failed as a character Rhaenyra is and her story). I'm sick of woke culture in the show! I am non-white woman but I know the history and I have a brain! Let's tolerate people who have some sense, please!

    • @mylittlethoughttree
      @mylittlethoughttree 11 годин тому

I don't know what you mean, what does woke culture have to do with not seeing Otto as a fan favourite? Personally, my favourites are Criston, Aegon, and Alicent. Not necessarily the most likeable but incredibly interesting. Otto is fine. He's mostly trying good things despite being a terrible parent, and also a little swayed by self-interest. Let's not pretend getting Viserys to marry Alicent was for the good of the realm, or that wanting Aegon to marry Rhaeneyra was a selfless desire. He's fine but not as psychologically interesting as others

I think you nailed it! The following is going to be quite a long read I think, but to expand on your evaluation... My impression is that a great part of Tywin's disdain for Tyrion is because he sees more of himself in Tyrion than he would like, and that he sees that Tyrion is, in many ways, actually doing a better job at being the man that Tywin aspires to be than Tywin is himself. For that, Tywin shames and belittles Tyrion to keep others' opinions of him low, lest he come to be viewed in higher esteem than Tywin is. Tywin cannot tolerate the possibility that he may be perceived (and thus humiliated) as lesser in any way than the "spiteful creature" that he detests. I believe that he secretly admires Tyrion's intelligence and the ease with which he handles people; Tyrion has a finesse in negotiating where Tywin must threaten and intimidate. Tywin envies Tyrion; he's generally happy and free of heavy responsibilities, he's also got friends and even found love again, and worst of all, people seem to actually LIKE him, not fear him. Tywin doesn't even seem to be THAT bothered by Tyrion's "lecherous behaviour" until he learns that Tyrion actually has feelings for a woman, then Tywin must destroy for Tyrion that which he envies (Taesha) or do his best to take it from him and have it for himself (Shea). He reacted in the same way when he returned to King's Landing after the Battle of the Blackwater and took Tyrion's place as Hand of the King. (Yes, I know it was meant to be his in the first place, but...) He gave Tyrion no praise or recognition whatsoever for doing his duty to the family by filling in for him, nor any thanks for his saving King's Landing from siege by Stannis and even gave the Tyrells sole credit for doing so. He could not abide that Tyrion had proven, once again, to be a better at something than he was himself. One of the best lines in the show is spoken by Tyrion as advice to Jon Snow, who was feeling hurt when others called him a bastard: -- "Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armour, and it can never be used to hurt you." That alone demonstrates that Tyrion may, in fact, be the ONLY Lannister Lion that truly does not concern himself with the opinions of the sheep! Tywin, of course, cannot admit to such inner turmoil, and so it outwardly manifests as disgust and disdain toward Tyrion, which he justifies by blaming him for the death of his mother, and shaming him for his "drinking and whoring." He outwardly projects that the whoring is what disgusts him most, but I think that if, as you say, he likely had his own experience with such activities, that what actually disgusts him is his own reflection, again, in an otherwise honourable man he will not even call his son. Well that's my two coppers, at least... :) Thank you for these fantastic insights! :) Your whole "Psychology of" series is brilliant! It's been years now, and I still find myself drawn back to the show and the books, mostly because of the depth of so many of the characters. My frustrations with G.R.R.M.'s excruciatingly slow writing is much countered by his skill in creating these characters that are so well-developed that sometimes it's easy to forget that they are fictional. ♥ [EDIT: about 12 hours later... I wrote all of this before seeing that you'd also done a video on Tyrion, in which you did cover much of this. Oops!]

Re: The mis-remembered kiss from Sandor--TLDR = Sansa kissed Sandor. Sandor has pyrophobia. He's out by the Mud Gate fighting and fighting but when they set the Blackwater Bay on fire he totally freaks out, panics, and abandons his post. First he goes and gets stupid drunk; then he decides he's got to get out of King's Landing. Then he remembers Sansa and he goes to her because he has always been drawn to her. Sansa's character arc is that she starts as the Maiden but becomes the Mother. She starts out being young and naïve, and idealizes about romance and beauty. Then she is shocked by the ugliness and brutality she experiences. As she matures she starts to balance the ugliness and the beauty in her mind, and she realizes her role as dispelling the ugliness from other people's lives. She prays for the people of King's Landing before the battle. She encourages Tommen to be a better knight. She saves Ser Dontos. If life is a lie then she learns to tell the white lies that parents tell their children to smooth over rough spots; she tells the ladies in the Keep that Joffrey has bravely stood his ground when, actually, he slunk off when his mommy summoned him. All these powerful men come to her with their hurts and it is her job to make them feel better. So when Sandor comes to her demanding a song, Sansa realizes how hurt he is and sings him a hymn to sooth his pain, kisses him to make all better, and then sends him on his way. The mis-remembering is because Sansa cannot rectify in her mind how someone like Sandor needs a mommy--and would look to her. The imagery of her dream where Sandor repeatedly plunges his sword into her could be s.a. but could also be child birth.

All the Greens are so emotionally stunted. None of them know how to process their emotions or provide emotional support to each other. It's an excellent example of how generational trauma propagates. It's all on Otto and, to a lesser degree, Visarys. Otto used his daughter as a pawn: used her for his own political gain and caused her trauma in the process so severe she couldn't properly emotionally bond with her children. Visarys treatment of her as an object for his own emotional and sexual gratification is part of that. Also, Visarys neglect of his sons (and daughter) by Alicent caused them to have no good parental model of emotional regulation. Visarys was able to be a somewhat decent father to Rheanerya. Why even marry Alicent and cause a succession crisis if you're going to ignore and neglect the children she provided?

I feel like Argon Vs. Otto scene is such a great demonstration of the generation war. Where young ones want to ACT and DISTUPT the status quo without a clear direction, while the old power wants to CONTROL and PLAN things to keep the status quo. If only Otto have better used of words & show more empathy, he might get through to Aegon. But Aegon too is consumed by rage and just want any form of retribution because he felt entitled to it. Such a great scene.

Do not worry, Hugh and Allan are very important going forward. There’s a reason they are receiving characterization and screen time. Also, apparently that scene that it ends on was supposed to be a very angry, almost violent, messy, messed up, long scene between Alicent and Criston, like they’re punishing each other. But Condal decided to cut it-against Olivia’s wishes, by the way. They were already so over for time, he argued it didn’t add anything new to the audience’s understanding of the dynamic, which was untrue in my opinion just based on what I’ve heard, and she was like confused how he could even think that, but she didn’t push the issue (probably because this is her first major role and she did ask why it had been cut, and stated her reasons as to why she felt it should be included, he just didn’t agree, and so she didn’t force the issue). But it def felt out of place to end on that, and it’s because we only got the first half of a scene and not the emotional guts, which was kind of a low point after Cargyllbowl.

@@cybele_mullejz Looper just posted a video with some quotes from the interview in it, sorry I can’t remember which publication it was with-I’ve been viewing most of the press junket interviews and they might do six or seven wearing that days outfit, it’s all very hard to tell apart because it’s just different sets and interviewers. But I know looper just posted a video covering why it was cut supposedly with some quotes about the situation

@@cybele_mullejz I think they were specifically asked if there were any scenes she was in that got cut that she wished hadn’t been cut, so it wasn’t like she was spouting off about being slighted. She just made the point that the animalism and violence of the scene was not gratuitous, which HBO was being rightfully much more mindful with this show’s production than they were for the first several seasons of GoT in terms of making the filming environment for intimacy scenes really safe; Olivia just felt strongly about the fact that it absolutely said a lot about where both her character and Criston Cole were at in terms of what they’ve done. I think they are overcorrecting a little bit in terms of depicting what happens between two consenting adults behind closed doors to deal with grief and guilt. Also this is the first sexually independent and sexually fulfilling time in Alicent’s life-after her husband is dead, she’s bore four healthy adult children, three of them male, her eldest son and daughter have already produced heirs of their own (barf), one of them is sat on the throne, again, with his own heir in line, by the time she allows herself to get nasty with Criston. At least that’s the actor’s understanding is that this didn’t even start until Viserys was dead. And Alicent is very religious in the beginning too so she felt like the fact that Alicent stopped wearing her necklace representing the seven in this episode and decided, even after questioning whether her own actions led to the loss her family is now experiencing, to continue with said actions because she doesn’t believe in the system that she’s fought her entire life to uphold and follow the rules laid down for her, from society, from religion. Plus like she’s the dowager queen so even though she really shouldn’t be sleeping with a kingsguard, she is entitled to her own pleasures now and could entertain the company of men if she really wanted to. She holds no real power. She’s performed her duties to the realm, used up by a system which failed to reward her in all the ways it traditionally is supposed to-by male primogeniture. Viserys really is the one responsible for the dance of the dragons, as much as I LOVE Paddy Considine. Like Alicent did everything that was required of her and received none of the security she would have been entitled to, by law, all because Viserys had issues with his brother and thought he had a dragon dream one time that he’d bear the next of the line to lead to the prince that was promised, and that it had to be a boy instead of just making Rhaeneyra heir and marrying someone who either couldn’t have children due to age or medical history, AT LEAST marrying strategically to the Velaryons or Boratheons, literally doing anything to prevent an immediate succession crisis the second he left this world.

I think her killing the night king gets a bad rap. Her revenge arc is all about people who hurt her family and took away what she knew. The night king threatened her family and everything about life that she knew ( all of Westeros), so killing him made sense as an action to help her family survive.

Dany is set up to burn Kings Landing, it's just going to happen very differently.. The Lannisters likely won't even be there.. It'll be Griff (Aegon) vs Danny. And neither of them will sit the throne.

THANK YOU. Everyone keeps having different opinions on Aemond's brothel scene, and this is the first one that makes sense to me. It's not supposed to be a sex scene - it's supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. I felt uncomfortable when she tried to make advances and he said no because you can see and hear the discomfort in his face and voice.

Generally, I think HotD has been better written than GoT from the start. GoT had an edge because the books it's based on are more expansive and engrossing, and I think characters it's easier to invest in from the start. But judging purely the quality of the screenplays, I think HotD has always been better and now that there's less time jumps, it's really starting to show

So obsessed with Aegon and Otto after this episode. Their actors put so much into these scenes and you can just feel their frustration and grief. Especially knowing Otto in the end is what made Aegon who he is from his mistreatment of Alicent who in turn has no idea how to console her children and help them deal with tragedy, plus of course it’s not like he was there to guide young Aegon into royalty when Viserys didn’t.
